December 4th, 2016
This is the time of year for holiday parties, ugly sweaters, and holiday themed races! Cranksgiving is for Thanksgiving; and Rudolph’s Rampage is for Christmas! What a better way to end the calendar year than with a local race that brings some good friends and the locals out.
Rudolph’s Rampage is a race put on by Active Columbia at Harbison State Forest in Columbia, SC. Each year around this time, we head up to fight the weather and get one last good effort in before the December holiday.
Weather called for 60% chance of rain and 48 degrees all week for the start. Lucky for all of us, we only experienced scattered showers during the race (opposed to a downpour… always looking at the bright side of things).
After socializing then doing a quick warm-up, the Pro/Expert 19-39 category lined up 5 of us to battle. Off the line at 11 this morning, local buddy and training partner, Patrick, and I took off from the front. For us, this was a 4 lap race with each lap lasting around 27 minutes. Patrick and I stayed together for the first two laps then I pulled off the front, riding solo for the remaining two. Later to find out that Patrick had a mechanical come the final lap.
The course ended up fairing pretty well with the rain. Slippery roots and only a handful of soft spots were on the trail. After the first few laps, the turns tacked up pretty well.
An hour and 51 minutes, and 25 miles later, I got my first Expert category win!
